New movie This Means War is directed by McG, is about CIA love triangles and stars Reese Witherspoon, but these are not the reasons you want to see the film. The main appeal of this spy romcom - and this is something that’s been amped up in the pre-release buzz - is in the meeting of the two leading males. Essentially, what This Means War offers is Kirk versus Bane.

By Kirk we mean American actor Chris Pine, and by Bane we mean British screen hero Tom Hardy. In this flick they’re playing secret agent buddies who find that they’re both dating Reese Witherspoon and subsequently become rivals. There’s potential for a rumble and should it come to that, that fight is inevitably going to be a pop culture punch-up tagged as Kirk vs Bane.

The third alternative Tuck & FDR ending of This Means War - is it going to happen on DVD? From an interview with McG:

Mr Hardy, as unlikely as it sounds, has found the one movie with a bigger, gayer subtext than Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy . 

“Yep,” nods McG. “It’s a very, very homoerotic movie. It’s Top Gun ’s shirtless volleyball scene homoerotic. I’ve even got an alternative ending for the DVD where the lads end up in each other’s arms. Tom is very alpha. And so is Chris.

“And Chris is so decidedly American and early Tom Cruise. And Tom Hardy is decidedly British. And I’ve also always liked pictures with that kind of alpha thing between male friends where they respect each other but couldn’t ever acquiesce.”

Today, This Means War, a new romantic action comedy from directorish-type McG comes to theaters starring Reese Witherspoon as a woman torn between two CIA operatives played by Tom Hardy and Chris Pine. The romantic action comedy hasn’t been doing too well over the last couple of years (The Killers, The Bounty Hunter, Knight and Day, One for the Money, need I go on?), but this one at least has the POTENTIAL to not be the worst movie ever, right? Mostly because why or how would *both* Chris Pine and Tom Hardy sign on to something awful? The release of This Means War also brings up the VERY important question of, if forced to choose between Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, who would get your vote? Let the unnecessary objectification begin!
